Residents of Monroe County believe that a strong cultural atmosphere is vital to the quality of life in our community. Through a variety of offerings in Monroe County and surrounding areas, residents and visitors can enjoy and participate in an active and growing arts and cultural environment.
Our region’s rich heritage is demonstrated by such distinctive attractions as a living farm experience, Native American cultural exhibits, one-room schools, period homes, and railway sites. These diverse museums and historic buildings give the curious a chance to explore Monroe County’s exciting past. Special programs, workshops, tours and events for all ages are offered throughout the year.
Headquartered in the Stroud Mansion in downtown Stroudsburg since 1921, the Monroe County Historical Association (MCHA) maintains three research and museum facilities open to the general public. The mission of MCHA is to promote the history of Monroe County and its surrounding areas. MCHA is dedicated to educating diverse audiences through a variety of resources and programs, including tours, lectures, workshops, professional research and children’s activities. Many professional artists make their homes and exhibit their work in the Poconos. When you explore our downtowns and back roads, you’ll find galleries specializing in a variety of styles, from contemporary to traditional. Many groups offer workshops, classes, clubs, and associations for those interested in any visual art form including crafts, photography, painting, and sculpture.
A wealth of performance opportunities can be found throughout the area. From classical to jazz music, ballet to modern dance, or professional to community theater, there is something for everyone. Attending a dance performance, acting in local theatre or singing in a choir – the region offers many chances to become parts of its exciting performing arts community.
Quality arts-related businesses also call Monroe County home. A wide array of local ad agencies, graphic artists, illustrators, and printers offer professional services equal to those found in large metropolitan areas.
Pocono Arts Council is the county-wide arts service organization established in 1975 to foster a rich and varied cultural environment in the Poconos. Located at 530 Main Street in Stroudsburg, the Council offers a variety of programs and services including a monthly newsletter, MCACARTSPACE Gallery, classes for children and adults, public gallery exhibits throughout the county, Arts in Education Regional Residencies and a website.
The council is strongly supported by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and grants money to local organizations conducting arts programming as one of ten PA Partner in the Arts.
