Monroe County’s proximity to large markets combined with the area’s breathtaking natural environment position the county as a great place to do business. As a unique four-season resort destination located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania and bi-sected by Interstate 80, businesses have easy access to the interstate highway system easily reaching their customers.
Today, a large part of our industry base remains recreation and tourism, but manufacturing, logistics, electronics, and pharmaceuticals also have a significant presence. The county’s largest public employer is Tobyhanna Army Depot with almost 4,000 employees and known for serving the military with their excellence in electronics. Sanofi, a worldwide leader in vaccine production, is the county’s largest private employer of 2,400. Healthcare is growing rapidly as well, with several recent expansions of Lehigh Valley Hospital – Pocono and St. Luke’s Hospital, Bartonsville Campus. Logistics and transportation are also large employers with a 1.25 million square foot Walmart Distribution Center, a 1.2 million square foot NFI Logistics center, a 1 million square foot American Tire Distibutors distribution center and several others currently under construction. Retail trade is also a strong economic driver in the area.
